Volunteer Scoop
“Volunteer Scoop” is a new feature designed to introduce the many wonderful DCHS volunteers, in their own words, to our members.

Mary Abbot
I am a Nevada native and love its history and blue skies and great outdoors. I was born in Reno and grew up in Gardnerville, graduating from the University of Nevada. After 10 years in Washington, D.C., working for the United States Congress, I returned to Nevada. Volunteering at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center has been a rewarding experience. Not only have I met wonderful people, but have learned so much more about our growing community.

My husband Ken and I spent all our vacations in this area in our fifth wheel and it was our dream to someday move here from Redlands, California. In 1997 that dream came true.
After we got our home fixed up, I read in the paper they (DCHS) needed volunteers so I signed on in 1999. After a few years, I volunteered at the Food Closet, too.
The people have been friendly and it gives you a feeling of belonging and at the same time giving back to the community that welcomed you.

My husband Bill and I retired and moved to Minden from southern California in November of 2002. About ten years prior to that, we had made a couple of trips to the Carson Valley to check it out as a possible retirement area. We thought it was a beautiful location away from the hectic pace of southern California, and, yet, not too far from our daughters. In December of 2002, we visited Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center for the Cookie Walk and to see the Christmas trees. I decided then that this would be a great place to volunteer and to learn a lot about Nevada history. Also, it would be a nice change from our working careers. I began volunteering in February of 2003 and also signed up Bill. Eventually, we were put in charge of the museum’s stores for almost three years. Being on the Trustee Board and volunteering has been a rewarding and educational experience. Also, we’ve met many really nice people.
